Managing diabetes during the travel may seem challenging, but there are several resources to help you plan a truly healthy trip. Diabetes management is highly individual, so it’s imperative that you consult your health practitioner before you travel and keep the needed online prescriptions in Teddington.   1. Book an appointment with your GP to discuss managing your diabetes during your journey. Plan to bring adequate insulin, medicine, and other supplies for the entire duration of your trip, including some extra in case they get lost.
  2. If you use insulin, your GP will help you determine the right way to adjust your insulin routine across time zones. If you are travelling towards the eastern countries, you will lose time and may need less instant or long-acting insulin. If you are travelling towards west, you will gain time and may need extra short-acting insulin and sugar-free food.
  3. If you are taking oral diabetes drugs and you will experience a 3hr time change or less, you can simply adjust the time you take the tablets for 1.5 hrs. For time changes over 3 hrs, consult your GP to adjust your medicine schedule.
  4. Get a prescription letter from your GP detailing the type of diabetes you have, the generic and brand names of your drugs, dosages, and a list of your much-needed medical supplies. This can help during border crossings and makes it simpler to find suitable medical care abroad.
  5. Don’t forget about vaccinations! This is an excellent time to make sure your routine immunisations are updated and get any travel vaccinations advice for your destination. Get vaccinated 4-6 weeks before your departure. This offers you time to get multiple doses of vaccines if required and build up immunity.
  6. If you are using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) or an insulin pump, notify your airline at least 48 hrs before departure.
  7. Pack some snacks in your carry-on bag where you can reach them easily in case your flight or meal is delayed. You should pack rapid-acting carbohydrates like glucose tablets and sweets to prevent the hypoglycemia.
